Paper Abstract:
|
This paper reports on a study that focused on growth of understanding about teaching geometry by a group of pre-service
teachers engaged in a computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) environment. Participation in the CSCL environment was found to facilitate considerable growth in the participants pedagogical-content knowledge but only
minimal growth in their subject-matter knowledge. Factors that influenced growth in pedagogical-content knowledge within the CSCL environment included the nature of the lesson planning task, Knowledge Forum ® scaffolds, and metalanguage
frameworks derived from Bredekamp and Rosegrant (1992) and Pirie and Kieren (1994) provided to the
participants. The paper concludes with suggestions about how the lesson planning task, Knowledge Forum® scaffolds and meta-language frameworks could be modified to enhance growth in subject-matter as well as pedagogical content
knowledge. |
